Real World Energy Solutions has designed an interactive and practical programme specifically to meet the needs of and empower business to reduce their energy consumption and carbon footprint.

What is a Carbon Champion?

A Carbon Champion is an employee who takes on, as part of their role, the responsibility of driving down energy usage by the implementation of energy efficiency measures. Examples would include changing work practices and behaviour of fellow employees or making physical changes to the buildings or operation of the business such as the installation of energy efficient equipment etc.

What are the benefits of having a Carbon Champion in your business?

Carbon Champions are the ‘agents for change’ – they are the people (elected by the business) who can use energy ‘monitoring & targeting’ equipment to suggest ways of reducing energy and then influence those around them to initiate action.

What will their role involve?

  • Understanding how and why the business uses energy in the way it does
  • measuring the use of energy within a particular business unit
  • reporting to the senior management regarding their findings
  • assessing the ways in which energy could be reduced in the most cost effective and least interruptive way
  • project manage initiatives that will drive down energy expenditure
  • influence the behavioural change of others
  • assess the cost-benefit of the changes made
  • present findings, both to senior managers and those involved in making the change happen
  • look for new opportunities to reduce energy further
  • look to see if efficiencies can be found elsewhere – e.g. water use, space saving, resource management etc.

Who should be the Carbon Champion?

We recommend that there are two levels of champion – one acting as the Carbon Sponsor for energy reduction within their business unit (likely to be a senior manager/Director), the other acting as the main Carbon Champion being someone who is able to gather support and promote a particular initiative to his or her work colleagues (likely to be a supervisor or similar with a bit of get up and go about them).
